Nkem Ononiwu is a Fellow of the African Scientific Institute (FASI) USA, and among the selected experts of United Nations on environment. A technocrat extraordinaire, Nkem has over 4 decades of experience in project, human and organizational management. He has an in depth knowledge of managing transformative projects, especially in the dry land (Northern) region of Nigeria, where issues of drought and desertification, due to climate change (orchestrated by human influence), are endemic. He was a former Director of Department of Drought and Desertification Amelioration, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria.
In 2017, he was appointed by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, as Nigeria's Country Consultant, Land Degradation Neutrality Target Setting Programme (UNCCD-LDN-TSP). He has managed several international projects, including World Bank, UNESCO, UNIDO etc, which has earned him several local and international awards regarding his exceptional qualities. He was recognized by the Green Economic Institute and SEPAN in 2017 for his ingenuity in leading the Team which designed the Conceptual Framework of Nigeria's version of the Great Green Wall. He is currently the National President of the Remote Sensing and Geoinformatic Association of Nigeria-RESGAN; and Chief Consultant, UZ-Jonas Consult.
